BCAG
NSW Priorities

- To reduce the impact of breast
cancer on the community, in terms of lives affected and lives lost
- To improve the experience
of those undergoing treatment for breast cancer
- To encourage those with
experience of breast cancer to contribute to all levels of decision-making
about this disease
- To promote and contribute
to research into the causes, prevention and optimal treatments for
people with breast cancer
- To work toward ensuring
access to the highest quality treatment and support services, regardless
of geographical location, social or economic status or stage of disease
- To provide a forum for women
and men to share experiences and information. [top]

Multidisciplinary
Model:
- Adoption of the Multidisciplinary
Model for breast cancer treatment at all major NSW hospitals, with
breast care nurses included in the team.
Easy Access:
- Easy access for all women
to reliable information required for decision-making, when it is
needed
- Restoration of informative inserts (CMIs) with packaging of prescription
drugs
- Easy access for women with
advanced breast cancer to specific information, support and recognition
of special needs. Promote uptake of new NBCC guidelines.
- Easy access for rural and
isolated women to specific financial support, financial assistance
for prostheses and compression garments, access to radiotherapy and
a review of IPTAAS Scheme
- Easy access for younger women
to specific information, support and recognition of special needs.
Review guidelines to facilitate early detection.
- Public access to a complete register of available clinical trials.
Research:
- Continue support for National
Action Plan for breast cancer research to provide a framework for researchers
- Encourage consumer
participation in the direction of research
- Continue lymphoedema research
into the prevalence and treatment of the condition caused by surgical
and radiation treatment
- Press for research for women with advanced breast cancer in areas of
specifically tailored drug regimes.
Fact or Fiction:
- Call for and contribute to evidence-based information
sheets on breast cancer including risk factors and complementary and
alternative therapies - available to all sectors of the community,
including the media. Promote use of absolute rather than realitive
risk terms.
Publication & Distribution:
- Continue development and updates of Directory of Breast Cancer
Treatment & Services for NSW Women (first published by BCAG NSW in 2002),
including its national roll-out and extension to include all cancers
(Senate Cancer Inquiry, June 2005, Recommendation 1).
Consumer Representation:
- Continue informed consumer
representation wherever decisions are being made about breast cancer. [top]
