Page Contents A new road map for the breast cancer journey Link to the Electronic Version of the BreastCancerDirectory A major project for the Breast Cancer Action Group NSW is the Directory of Breast Cancer Treatment and Services in New South Wales. The Directory was launched in August 2002 by our patron, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC, Governor of NSW, who said: "This is an outstanding achievement - a first in Australia - which I know will prove a most valuable resource for women". We thank our partner in this venture, the NSW Breast Cancer Institute (NSW BCI), not only for their hard work in the development process, but also for sharing our vision of producing a reliable, informed and compact Directory to signpost the way on the breast cancer journey. Directory Aim The aim of the Directory is to make the selection process easy for you and your GP, and to ensure you are referred to the appropriate specialist/s for your situation. Directory Format & Contents The 170 specialists, with one page each, may be found by specialty: breast surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, by public and private hospital, and by postcode. Each specialist provided information detailing everything you could need to know when selecting the best specialist/s for you. A section describing the breast cancer journey details the options, the medical teams involved and how to access other services - familial counselling, palliative care, prostheses, lymphoedema clinics, support groups - the works! Directory Distribution Complimentary hard copies have been sent to the 7,700 General Practitioners in NSW, specialists, public libraries, Women's Health Centres, the Cancer Helpline, CancerConnect, BreastScreen and treatment centres - this is a gift from women who have experienced breast cancer to those who find themselves on the same journey. Directory - Electronic Version The electronic version of the directory is accessed at the NSW Breast Cancer Institute (NSW BCI), website: www.bci.org.au. The Directory site has links to: BCAG NSW, Breast Cancer Network Australia, The Cancer Council NSW, The Cancer Council Australia's "Find a Specialist" website service, and the National Breast Cancer Centre. BCAG NSW Thanks We are most grateful to our Directory partner, the NSW BCI, the NSW Health Department for their $40,000 grant, other supporters including Ravenswood School, the NSW BCNA, and generous private donors. BCAG NSW is extremely proud of this consumer initiated achievement and hopes it spawns look-alikes in other states and for other cancers and diseases. Sally Crossing, Chair
